The Mainland, our largest visitor source market accounting for 76% of our total arrivals, recorded a solid rebound of 3.9% in the number of visitors. With the reduction in downward pressure posed by the “one trip per week” measure on arrivals two years after its implementation, same-day Mainland arrivals increased mildly by 2.0%. Meanwhile, non-Mainland arrivals continued to grow by 1.1%, with visitors from the North Asian markets (including Japan and Korea) surging by 9.4%.

Hong Kong’s top ten visitor source markets in 2017 in the order of arrival numbers were the Mainland, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, the United States, Macao, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia and Thailand. Altogether they accounted for over 92% of the total visitor arrivals.

To attract more high-spending overnight visitors, we strive to bring more Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) events to Hong Kong and strengthen Hong Kong’s image as Asia’s cruise hub. Overnight MICE arrivals grew further by 1.9% to the all-time high of 1.93 million, while total cruise passengers throughput increased strongly by 33.4% to 0.9 million in 2017, alongside a 28.3% increase in total ship call to 245.
