Ocean Park Hong Kong was officially open to the public in 1977. It is a public recreational, educational and conservational park, and also a major resort and leisure destination in Hong Kong.
To enhance its attractiveness, the Ocean Park Corporation (OPC) completed its Master Redevelopment Plan in 2012. New attractions such as the world’s first integrated indoor and outdoor multi-Asian-species exhibit “Amazing Asian Animals”, the “Grand Aquarium” which is one of Asia’s largest aquariums, and the “Polar Adventure” featuring a theme of polar habitat were introduced.
Following the completion of the redevelopment plan, OPC embarked on two hotel projects and a Tai Shue Wan Water World project to further enhance the Park’s overall appeal and receiving capacity. The Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriot Hotel and Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong came into operation in 2018 and 2022 respectively, while the all-weather indoor cum outdoor Water World was officially open in September 2021.
OPC has also kept strengthening its conservation and education functions. For example, a new animal exhibit “Little Meerkat and Giant Tortoise Adventure” and a technology-driven and interactive STEAM Hub “Explorer R” were open in 2020 and 2021 respectively, and a variety of conservation and education programmes were provided throughout the year.
Following the announcement of the future strategy for Ocean Park in 2021, the Government and OPC have been actively implementing various initiatives under the future strategy with a view to transforming the Park into a destination which focuses on conservation and education, grounded in nature and complemented by adventure and leisure elements to enhance visitors’ experience. Those initiatives include completing relevant legislative amendments, reinforcing the Park’s conservation and education endeavours both inside and outside the Park, trying out activities of different types and nature in the Park, taking forward outsourcing arrangements for the different themed zones within the Park, conducting technical studies for the pier projects at Deep Water Bay and Tai Shue Wan as well as providing temporary landing facility at Tai Shue Wan and launching marine tours, etc. Upon launching of the temporary landing facility at Tai Shue Wan in August 2022, OPC provided, on a pilot basis, ferry services for visitors of Water World on designated dates, and launched different marine tourism routes.
